Things you can do better than a PI (http://www.tracepeople.co.uk)

It’s worth remembering that there’s several things you can do to find missing people better than any private investigator, as you intimately know the person you’re looking for. Doing these things will help any professional investigator find your missing person quicker.

  1. Call any friends or family in common. You’re obviously going to get a better response asking questions to these people compared with any outsider. Even if your friends and family in common don’t know the missing person’s location chances are the will remember details you didn’t and these can be passed onto the investigator – Date of Birth, last known addresses, who they spent time dating or living with etc. Don’t forget to inform the PI you hire of any half-leads. If you know of friends/family in common who will probably know where the missing person is but you can’t recall their exact address tell the PI. These people will probably be easier to locate if the missing person can’t be found.
  2. Email contacts on their social networking webpage. If the missing person has you listed as a friend on their Myspace, Facebook webpage you will have permission to email any friends listed on their webpage. The missing person may not be answering their own emails but you can contact these listed friends and ask them to pass on a message to get back in touch should they know where they are. Again, the level of intimate details you know about your missing friend or family member are impossible for an outsider to fake. Email them with lots of details about your friend in common. Even though these people may not know you, often they will just email you the missing person’s phone number or new email address if you ask for it.
  3. Make sure they have actually moved.  When you hire a private investigator they assume the person is missing and not at their last known address. Occasionally after several hours work we find out that the person is still living at that address they just have fallen out with the client and not responded to them. It costs money and time to ascertain if a person is still at an address for an investigator, 99% of our clients would want to know why we’re spending time and money checking out an address they know the person is not at. So before you hire a PI take a drive to the person’s address and chap on the door, that way you’ll know one way or another.
